USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Rita Herron fell in love with books at the ripe age of eight when she read her first Trixie Belden mystery. But she didn’t think real people grew up to be writers, so she became a teacher instead. Now she writes so she doesn’t have to get a real job!

With over ninety books to her credit, she’s penned romantic suspense, romantic comedy, and YA stories, but she especially loves writing dark romantic suspense tales set in southern small towns.

Organizations Rita is a member of:

▶  International Thriller Writers

▶  Sisters in Crime

▶  Romance Writers of America

Rita is represented by Jenny Bent with the Bent Agency.

Questions & Answers

What do you love most about being a writer?

Being able to sleep until eight o’clock and not having to fight traffic! Seriously, I like the flexibility—I can set my own hours and be home when my kids are home. And I love being creative and getting paid for it—there is nothing more exciting (well, almost nothing) than when a new idea pops into my head, then when the details and scenes start coming together to form a story.

What do you like least about being a writer?

The inconsistent money — my kids get tired of hearing me say, “I’m supposed to get a check sometime soon, then we can go shopping!” I also don’t like it when people act as if I’m not working — writing is fun but it’s also a lot of hard work. Working at home can get lonely, too.

What are your five favorite books?

  • Cry Wolf – Tami Hoag
  • Blue Willow – Deborah Smith
  • Shocking Pink – Erica Spindler
  • Red Roses Mean Love – Jacquie D’Alessandro
  • Our Husband — Stephanie Bond

What is your favorite romantic movie?

While You Were Sleeping. What could be more romantic than being caught between two sexy brothers? I also loved that quirky family.

What is your favorite romantic song or composition?

I have two – Desperado by the Eagles (my favorite group) and Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton (that one makes me swoon!).
